牛津英汉词典 解构英语词汇

注意时间

要说出意思准确、地道的英语，必须对词语搭配多加注意。如果要说「消磨时间」、「打发时间」，英语里有什么动词可以跟time搭配使用？除了kill以外，也可用Pass和While away，例如We killed time playing cards（我们打纸牌消磨时间）、We sang songs to pass the time（我们藉唱歌消磨时间）、We whiled away the time reading and playing cards（我们靠看书和玩纸牌消磨时间）。要说「花时间」的话可以用Spend，例如I hope to spend more time with my family（我希望有更多时间陪陪家人），也可用 Devote指投入、利用时间，例如She devotes all her spare time to gardening（她把闲暇都用在园艺上）。

如果要说虚度时光，可以用Fritter away或Idle away，例如They idled the days away, talking and watching television（他们天天在闲聊和看电视中消磨时光）。如果要说浪费时间，可以用Waste，例如We're wasting precious time（我们在浪费宝贵的时间）。
